About
What is a geo-environmental risk assessment?
A geo-environmental risk assessment is a process of identifying and evaluating the potential risks to human health and the environment posed by ground contamination and geotechnical hazards. It is an important tool for informing decision-making about land use, development, and remediation.
When needed
When is a geo-environmental risk assessment required?
Risk assessments are typically required for the following types of projects:
- Land development and redevelopment
- Property transactions
- Planning applications
- Environmental permitting
- Environmental impact assessments
- Remediation of contaminated land
Types
Types of geo-environmental risk assessments
There are three main types:
PRA
Preliminary risk assessment (PRA):
A PRA is a detailed assessment that is typically conducted to identify potential risks and to determine whether further assessment is required. It is based on a review of available information, such as historical records, environmental data, site maps including geological information, and aerial photographs.
An initial conceptual site model (CSM) is prepared to identify potential contaminants of concern associated with current / previous site activities and potential pathway linkages to receptors. Preparation of a CSM is the first stage in a risk-based appraisal of development sites in accordance with current practice and enables the selection of exploratory hole locations to target areas of environmental interest.
Our PRA reports are compliant with the guidance presented in LCRM (Environment Agency, 2020) and BS10175:2011+A2:2017 ‘Investigation of potentially contaminated sites – Code of practice’ and have been used in support of planning applications for the development of sites across the UK.
GQRA
Generic quantitative risk assessment (GQRA):
A GQRA is an assessment that uses generic assessment criteria and assumptions to estimate the likelihood and consequences of potential risks. It is typically used to assess the risks associated with common types of contamination, such as metals, hydrocarbons, and solvents, typically using information gained from exploratory holes during a phase of intrusive site investigation.
DQRA
Detailed quantitative risk assessment (DQRA):
A DQRA is the most detailed type of risk assessment and is typically used to assess the risks associated with complex sites or where there is a high level of uncertainty. It uses site-specific assessment criteria to estimate the likelihood and consequences of potential risks
